The California Department of Public Health has a video on how to renew a license online: “How to Renew a License/Certificate with CDPH”
First, go to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Laboratory Field Services (LFS) website:
Laboratory Field Services – Home (ca.gov)
Under Personnel, click on Renewals.
If you already have an account, you can log in to the online application system (CDPH LFS Online Portal). If not, click the link to create an account, then enter your certificate and license information. If you’ve forgotten your California phlebotomy certificate or clinical lab personnel license number, you can search for your license number here: License Search
Once logged into PERL:
- Click on Renew My Licenses.
- Verify all personal information and conviction details, and make changes as needed.
- Select one license to renew at a time. The exact license type will appear. For phlebotomists, it will be one of the following: Limited Phlebotomy Technician, Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, or Certified Phlebotomy Technician II (CPT II).
Under Continuing Education Details:
- Click Add New Continuing Education.
- Do not check the box for “Is this an Educational Institution?“

Continuing education (CE) courses can be completed at any time, but online renewal is only available for licenses within 60 days of expiration or after expiration. This applies to California-certified/licensed phlebotomists (LPT, CPT-I, CPT-II) and all California-licensed clinical laboratory personnel.
California mandates that all phlebotomists hold an active and valid license issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Laboratory Field Services (LFS). Performing phlebotomy with an expired license is a violation of state regulations. Acorn CE’s ‘Pre-analytical Processing and Phlebotomy 2024‘ online course is fully mobile-compatible and provides an immediate certificate upon completion. The certificate includes your name, license number and date of completion allowing you to renew your license online instantly. Unlike other CE providers that require mailing, faxing, or emailing answer sheets and waiting for manual grading—potentially delaying your certification by up to 30 days—Acorn CE offers a fast, seamless, and hassle-free renewal process.
California certified/licensed phlebotomists (LPT, CPT-I, CPT-II) can easily renew an expired phlebotomy certificate through the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Laboratory Field Services (LFS) online portal, following the regular renewal process. To confirm eligibility for renewal, log in to the LFS online application portal to check for renewal notice. Completing the ‘Pre-analytical Processing and Phlebotomy 2024 – 6 units CE‘ course satisfies the continuing education requirements for renewal. Retaking the phlebotomy course or national certification exams like ACA, AMCA, AMT, ASCP, NNC/MMCI, or NHA is not required. For help or if your renewal isn’t visible in the system, email [email protected]
If your phlebotomy certification has expired in California, you can renew it by following these steps:

- Complete the required continuing education (CE) courses, such as the Pre-analytical Processing and Phlebotomy 2024 – 6 units CE course.
- Submit your renewal application through the portal and pay the applicable fees. (California does not charge any additional fee for those renewing an expired phlebotomy certificate. You can view the current license renewal fee schedule on the CDPH LFS website here. However, for other licensed categories in California, such as MLT, Cytotechnologist, CLS/Limited License Scientist, and Lab Director, a late fee does apply.)
- Wait for approval, and ensure your certification is active before resuming work as a phlebotomist.
